This would be great news for you if you are worried with the blood sugar level of patients having diabetes. It has been proved that dog has the ability to sense the change of diabetics’ blood sugar level. Dogs have already shown themselves capable of leading the blind, alerting the deaf, and helping the physically disabled with daily tasks. Anecdotal reports suggest that some dogs can perform early warning of hypoglycemia by using their sense of smell to ’sniff out’ if their owner’s blood sugar levels are dropping.

It’s because of the strong sense of smelling that they can have an eye on blood sugar level of diabetic people. It’s the 5th sense which gives them this power. Labrador retrievers are used for detection although they don’t even do their graduation of the training. The reason for their every step is resistance to walk sometimes in rain or getting into the elevator but all are because of some reasons. They undertake almost 4 months of training to detect the explosives & narcotics. Now how it works out is the 2 year old dog is taught how to smell the scent of low blood sugar. After that they take the soft tube hanged around their neck to alert when they smell the same scent in a diabetic person.

A few years ago, when hypoglycemic alert dogs were first announced, this announcement coincided with the new glucose sensors that were about to be released. This caused many people to be skeptical. However, skeptics have been won over in favor of the dogs. Dogs are extremely sensitive to subtle changes in their companions. A hypoglycemic patient may emit a characteristic odor that may begin anywhere from five to forty five minutes prior to an actual attack. The dog will then give their owner a warning so that the owner can take necessary precautions to either prevent the attack or make sure that they are in a safe environment.

Scientists remain unsure about how the dogs are able to sense changes in their human companions. It is believed that the dogs are reacting to scents created by chemical changes related to glucose imbalance, but no one knows exactly which chemicals cause the scent. Despite this scientific uncertainty, hypoglycemia alert dogs have provided a great sense of relief to people with diabetes and their families, including parents of young children with diabetes and adults whose history of hypoglycemic episodes made it difficult or even dangerous to live alone.

If we count the number of children & adults having in diabetes in United States, you will be surprised to see the number rising over 20 million. The patients having this disease are actually not producing enough insulin in the body just because of the pancreas and the insulin hormone is actually required to break the different ingredients of our diet like sugar , starch in energy. Patients with diabetes should check their sugar level on a regular basis and sometimes in the mid of the night to avoid the failure of organs which can be caused by a high level.

Dogs who have earned a graduate degree are accurate for more than 90%. People having this disease really prefer to have these dogs as personal sugar level detector with four legs. The sensors wouldn’t be correct every time as its a machine and there are wear & tears and this is a real mystery that how does the dog detects this blood sugar level and the research are going on to find the truth. Everybody of us hopes to get the reasons how are they so good in picking the glucose level and they should be recognized as a system giving early warning to diabetic patients.
